Earlier this year, New York City Mayor de Blasio announced his "Vision Zero" plan to reduce traffic deaths in the city by lowering the speed limits on 25 major city roads. The first of these roads will be Atlantic Avenue, which will have its speed limit reduced from 30 to 25 miles per hour.
The New York Department of Transportation also plans to re-time the traffic lights on the street so that those who follow the speed limits hit more green lights than speeding motorists.
Why is Atlantic Avenue the first of the 25 roads to have its lights and speed limits changed? Because there were 25 traffic fatalities along its 7.6 mile stretch between 2008 and 2012. Of those fatalities, 13 were pedestrians.
Atlantic Avenue is one of the most trafficked and most dangerous roads in the NYC metro area. Mayor de Blasio's "Vision Zero" intends to change these statistics in the coming years.
