NYC Mayor's Caravan Caught Violating Multiple Traffic Laws After Mayor Announces Plan to Reduce Traffic Deaths

On February 18 of this year, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an aggressive plan to reduce traffic deaths in the city, including lowering speed limits and slowing cabbies down. Only two days later, CBS 2 news cameras caught the mayor's 2-SUV caravan – driven by his NYPD security detail with the mayor riding in the leading vehicle – committing a number of dangerous traffic infractions.

The mayor's caravan drivers were caught running two stop signs, driving 10 and 15 mph over the posted speed limits, and changing lanes without signaling. CBS 2 reported that, if the drivers of the caravan vehicles had been cited for all of these violations, they would lose their licenses according to the New York point system.

  • Running a Stop Sign: 3 points (doubled for 2 infractions)
  • 10 mph Over the Speed Limit: 3 points
  • 15 mph Over the Speed Limit: 4 points
  • Total Points if Cited: 13 points
  • Points Needed for License Suspension: 11 points

In addition, when the mayor returned to city hall, he stayed in his SUV in the parking lot. As a result, his chase car was unable to enter the plaza and blocked an intersection and crosswalk, making it so that pedestrians had to walk around it.

The Mayor's press secretary passed all questions related to security and transportation to the NYPD, recognizing the NYPD's training and protocol. The NYPD responded saying that the personnel assigned to the mayor's security detail had received specialized training based on security and safety. This training may include maintaining speed with the general flow of traffic and utilizing tactics to safely keep two or more police vehicles together.
